1. Starting with gallery standard wood panels made from kiln dried pine or basswood for the frames and face panels of birch, I sculpt upon them with a gypsum and paper mixed media over recycled paper armature to form the trees, leaves and architectural elements that make up the bas-relief. Gypsum is a soft white or gray mineral consisting of hydrated calcium sulfate. Today we use it to make plaster of Paris for casts and other building materials, but it’s use harkens back to ancient Egypt where it was used in construction and decoration, withstanding the tests of time.
2. After the gypsum mixed media sculpting has dried, taking anywhere from a day to a week to do so, I then paint with professional grade acrylics beginning with the background. Painting on wood is unique in that the paint is absorbed into the fibres, and the grain of the wood and the play of the paint upon it become another element of interest within the finished work.
3. From the background I work forward painting the foreground – the sculpted parts of the piece. It is here that I love to let the paint have it’s way allowing “happy accidents” upon the textured surface.
4. Signing my name to the piece and spraying it with several layers of archival matte varnish to protect it from light and dust, another Alison Galvan Bas-Relief Fusion Painting is born!

The Art Storefronts Organization has verified that this Art Seller has published information about the archival materials used to create their products in an effort to provide transparency to buyers.
All original artwork has been created on gallery quality 2" wood panels and sculpted with a gypsum product very similar to the material make up of drywall. So, like the walls of your home will last forever unless abused intentionally, or unintentionally, as in the case of flooding, or other natural disasters etc... the sculpting material has been chosen for it's durability and longevity. Over the sculpting, all original artworks are painted with professional artist grade acrylic paints of the highest quality. Finally all pieces have been sprayed with an archival matte varnish to protect them from dust and light.
